Dads can be tough to buy presents for, no? Every time a gift-giving occasion rolls around where I need to figure out some sort of idea for what to give my dad, I feel completely and utterly stumped.
He’s one of those people that says he really doesn’t need or want anything… and he actually means it.
My dad is an incredibly selfless and wonderful man who is the kind of father that is willing to drop just about everything on a whim to come help me with any project I have happening. Did I mention that he’s also super talented and can build furniture, craft instruments (with his actual hands!), and is always working on some amazing home improvement project?
Despite all that he has going on, he’s never once told me he’s too busy when I ask him for help. He tiled our fireplace for us when I had a deadline looming and a brand new baby soaking up all of my free time. He taught me how to build a flower bed for the front yard (and then cheered me on when I tackled the next one myself). He commiserated with me when I was exhausted from digging up our patio – because he was doing the same kind of work at his house at the same time.
All that to say, dads are pretty awesome, but mine is the best. And, my kids have also got a pretty incredible father too – so I get to come up with ideas for a couple of different amazing men every year. And, as fun as it is to spoil the people in your life with great gifts, sometimes the store can’t provide anything that’ll cut it. So, I thought today I’d share a few ideas for how you can show the dads in your life how much they mean to you with some simple (but meaningful) acts of service.
I know this can be a hard holiday for some – not everyone has a father figure in their lives. But, I think most of us have at least some form of dad in our life (whether he’s the dad to your kids, your own dad, or just a dude you really like) that we could show some love to this Father’s Day. So, if you’re looking for ideas for Father’s Day gifts that will be meaningful and that he’ll remember for years to come, look no further.
5 Acts of service gift ideas for father’s day
1. Give him a full day of your time. If your dad is anything like mine, he constantly has some sort of project brewing around the house. Why not set aside a day, get someone to watch the kids, and head over to help him out with whatever he’s working on for the day. My dad has been building a greenhouse for his yard, and I have a feeling he’d welcome some company while he’s digging and working away in the scorching Texas sun.
2. Take something off his to-do list. If you don’t have a full day to devote (and, I get it! Life is busy!), why not just take something that you know your dad has to do and knock it out for him? Even something as simple as running a few errands for him can make a huge difference and will make your dad feels special. Corey is generally the errand-runner in our house, so I know he’d love it if I took over the responsibility for him!
3. Do his yard work for the week. Wouldn’t it make a great Father’s Day gift to head over to your dad’s house, make him a glass of sweet tea, and tell him to prop up his feet while you mow the lawn?! Corey and I split the yard work about 50/50 in our house, but it’s often a battle of the wills to see who will break down and tackle it first. I know he’d love to come home to that chore already crossed off the list for the week!
Of course, you get bonus points if you involve the kids in this one. Jackson always wants to help with the yard work, and since our Greenworks lawn tools are so lightweight and easy to use, he’s actually able to start doing a few things back there with me! Jack and I spent one morning while Grant was napping knocking out some of the yard work – I mowed ahead of time (since he can’t quite help with that), and then I set him up with the leaf blower while I worked with the string trimmer.
Pssst: If you do want to buy dad something this year, Greenworks is having a big sale right now! You can get up to 25% off a tool that he’ll love!
Not only is this a great way to show the dad in your life that you love him (whether its your own dad or your kids’ dad), it’s so great for your kids to start learning about how to take care of the yard. I love that all of our tools are battery powered, because it makes it that much easier for Jackson to participate in the yard work. Plus, battery operated yard tools are not only less noisy, less smelly, and less of a hassle, they’re also better for the environment.
Win-win-win!
4. Write him a letter. I don’t know about you, but I rarely take the time to actually tell the people in my life how much they mean to me. I think it’s something we all struggle with, but Father’s Day is the perfect time to take a moment to write dad a quick note to share a few of those sentiments that you might not typically tell him in person. I think it’s safe to say it’d be his favorite Father’s Day gift ever.
5. Dive into his world. In the end, all most dads really want for Father’s Day is to spend a little time with their kids – especially the dads with grown-up kids who have lives and families of their own. How special would it be to take a few hours (or a day, or even a weekend) to do something with your dad that’s all about him and his interests? If your dad loves vintage cars, plan a day to the local car show with him. If he’s a music nut, buy tickets to a show you know he’ll love and go with him. Everyone loves it when the people they care about take the time to learn more about their passions, and I don’t think dad is any exception.
Hopefully this gets your brain churning with a few fun ways that you can show you care this Father’s Day. I have always had a really close relationship with my dad, and I love to watch Corey start forming that kind of bond with our kids as well. A great dad is hard to come by, so showing them a little love by spoiling them a bit on Father’s Day is the least we can do!
